The National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA) and NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) will co-convene a special event to examine the impetus for and unfinished work of the Report of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (Kerner Commission Report) to mark the 55th anniversary of the report’s release.

About the Kerner Commission

The Kerner Commission, convened by President Johnson in 1967 in response to racial justice protests, issued its seminal report in February 1968. It noted, “Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white--separate and unequal.” Many of the circumstances that prompted President Johnson to constitute the Commission still plague us today‒unfair and discriminatory law enforcement policies and practices, predatory lending and redlining, housing discrimination, environmental injustice, a flawed justice system, unjust employment practices, voter suppression, appraisal bias, and other injustices stemming from systemic racism.
