Housing inequity disproportionately impacts women as discriminatory intersections based on sex, family status, and race continue to plague our communities. Women have been the backbone and leading at the forefront of nearly every civil rights and freedom movement in our nation’s history. From Mamie Till and Coretta Scott King to Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin, and other Mothers of the Movement, women are stalwart leaders and agents of change. The leading champions of fair housing have largely been women, including Lee Porter (the “mother” of the Fair Housing), HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge, and NFHA’s own Shanna Smith and Lisa Rice. In this interactive session, participants will be asked to share their inspiration and role models in the movement. The panel will share strategies and tactics to further women’s rights and gender equity, and how the Fair Housing Act can be used as a tool to advance justice.
