The nation’s shortage of affordable housing is a major driver of today’s fair housing crisis, prompting renewed efforts to support new construction and reform local rules that limit residential density. But building more housing alone will not ensure that renters and homebuyers without intergenerational wealth can access safe, stable, and affordable homes in the communities of their choice. Long-term affordability also requires strategies that preserve existing affordable homes, expand shared ownership and community-based housing models, and create right-sized “missing middle” options such as duplexes, triplexes, and small multifamily homes. This session will explore how local governments, community partners, and housing advocates are advancing innovative housing and financing models that keep new and existing housing opportunities affordable, attainable, and sustainable.
