HUD is developing a new regulation to implement the affirmatively furthering fair housing (AFFH) provision of the Fair
Housing Act; that rule is likely to take effect early in 2024. For fair housing groups, the fair housing planning process
mandated by the rule can be a vehicle for strengthening ties with local allies, building a stronger relationship with local and state agencies, and aligning the government – at all levels – in favor of fair housing. The 2015 AFFH rule gave us a preview of the fair housing process that will kick off next year, as a small number of jurisdictions and public housing agencies went through the process of developing Assessments of Fair Housing under that rule. In this session, we will highlight the lessons learned under the 2015 rule and similar state requirements and explore how fair housing groups can build on them moving forward to advance equity in our communities.
