A landlord demands citizenship papers no law requires. A housing authority verifies status that it has no authority to verify. And a family stops answering the door out of fear of who may be on the other side. Immigrant families are losing housing not only related to aggressive ICE enforcement, but to fear-driven overcompliance by housing providers that has no basis in the law. Meanwhile, the housing providers going along with this overreach expose themselves to liability.
