Reverend H. Lionel Edmonds has served as pastor of the Mount Lebanon Baptist, a multi-site congregation that ministers throughout the nation’s capital since 1992. Since coming to Mount Lebanon, Pastor Edmonds has led the congregation in spiritual formation, congregational growth and social justice. He is the founder of the House of Lebanon, a $30 million dollar ministry facility that concentrates on spiritual development, affordable housing, healthcare, workforce development, educational and entrepreneurial advancement. He is also the founder of Lebanon Village at Langston-Slater, $40 million dollar 55-unit affordable housing development that features both rental units and condominiums for sale.
In 1996, he co-founded the Washington Inter-Faith Network (WIN) which consists of over 45 congregations and non-profits in the Washington, DC region. Pastor Edmonds is also a leader in the Metro Industrial Area’s Foundation consisting of five organizations in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia made up of over 200 congregations and non-profits that stands together for social justice. In 2024, Pastor Edmonds co-founded DC POWER (People Organized for Wealth, Equity & Respect) another Industrial Areas Foundation, in the nation’s capital. DC POWER consists of 38 congregations and two labor unions in the District of Columbia. The focus of DC POWER is the building of civic power through the creation of 1000 affordable housing units on land controlled by her faith-based member institutions. Also DC POWER is establishing workforce career paths in partnership with her labor union partners and businesses throughout DC.
As an entrepreneur for the Kingdom of God, he has helped pastors and congregations in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area develop over $100 million dollars for their church’s community development ministries. He has also established a nationally recognized faith-based partnership with numerous Fortune 500 companies as well as labor unions putting people to work and providing opportunities for growing businesses.
Pastor Edmonds, a graduate of the Howard University School of Divinity, functions as an adjunct professor at Howard’s School of Divinity. He is the past recipient of the “Eyes on the Prize Award” from the AFL-CIO Council Committee on Civil and Human Rights and the Metropolitan Washington Labor Council. A published author, he wrote the books “The Believers Guide to the Jesus Gym”, and “Cupolo And The Birthday Party”. In addition, he is a musician, social activist, entrepreneur, poet, and most importantly, lover of our Lord Christ Jesus. Pastor Edmonds was elected the fifty-fifth President of the Missionary Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Washington, DC, and Vicinity in January 2022. He is also a member of the Washington, DC Hall of Fame.
He and his lovely wife, the former Joyce A. Coates, have been married for over four decades, and are the proud parents of their son, David, and his wife, Moshi.
