Martie Lafferty is Executive Director of the Tennessee Fair Housing Council (TFHC). She leads TFHC in providing a full range of services towards the fulfillment of its mission to eliminate housing discrimination in Tennessee. Under Martie’s leadership, TFHC partnered with NFHA to reach a 2025 settlement with a housing provider to increase the accessibility of apartments at 13 apartment complexes. In addition, in 2025 TFHC was a named plaintiff in litigation to ensure that HUD awarded and obligated FY 2024 FHIP funds already allocated by Congress. Martie’s fair housing work began in 1999 when she became TFHC’s first staff attorney, a position she held for four years. In the intervening period before Martie’s return to TFHC as E.D. in 2022, she served in multiple nonprofit leadership roles including as Legal Director at Disability Rights Tennessee and Director of the Accessibility Project at the Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center. Throughout her career, Martie has focused her practice of law on civil rights issues including fair housing, disability rights, and accessibility. She’s a skilled litigator with substantial experience handling complex federal litigation in Tennessee and across the United States. Martie is a graduate of Centre College, Vanderbilt Divinity School, and Vanderbilt Law School.
