Lisa Rice, President and CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance, and Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, examine how two simultaneous assaults on civil rights are compounding the crisis facing communities of color. The Supreme Court's Louisiana v. Callais ruling, which misinterprets Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — effectively gutting the provision — and the accelerating rollback of fair housing enforcement together represent a dual assault on the political and economic power of Black, Latino, and other communities of color. The conversation draws a direct line between residential segregation and political disenfranchisement — where you live shapes which district you're in, and discriminatory housing patterns concentrate voters, based on race and ethnicity, in ways that invite exploitation. When communities lose power in the housing market and at the ballot box simultaneously, the damage is exponential. Proaño and Rice also explore what genuine multiracial coalition-building demands in practice — moving beyond solidarity statements to shared litigation activities, coordinated legislative advocacy, collaborative communications strategies, and the durable community organizing infrastructure needed to defend and advance a truly multiracial democracy.
