In May 2024, Dr. Raven Baxter — a molecular biologist with a Ph.D. in science education — made an offer on a Virginia Beach condo at the asking price, and the seller initially accepted. But during the escrow period, Dr. Baxter learned that the seller wanted to back out of the deal solely because she did not want to sell her home to a Black person. In the face of blatant racial discrimination, Dr. Baxter, represented by Relman Colfax, LLPC, chose to fight — and won.  In this candid fireside chat, Dr. Baxter joins National Fair Housing Alliance President and CEO Lisa Rice to discuss what happened, why she chose to speak out, and what her experience reveals about the persistence of housing discrimination in America today. As Dr. Baxter has said, "Good things can happen when people stick up for themselves. Everyone deserves to be part of the American dream." Together, they explore the legal protections that exist, the barriers that remain, and how Dr. Baxter is now channeling her experience into a nationwide movement to educate, empower, and advocate for fair housing for all.
